Hi. I was homeschooled in high school. The best place to get books is the library- and it’s free. We researched local colleges and went to their bookstores to see what books they were using in what classes. based on this, we got books from the public library that were the same ones they were using. Because of this, I was able to test out of several subjects when I entered college.
If you don’t want to borrow the books, try ebay!
ok well your best bet is most likely ebay. I was homeschooled a couple years ago and my mom got the BEST deals on books there. (she is obsessed w/ ebay) LOL. They have some good deals if you can find them!
Also check out Amazon.com they also have some great textbooks
GOOD LUCK!

You could ask around, there is home-school groups in all areas. And a lot of them have used books sales at the end of the school year. You could try asking at your local library to pass your number on to a homeschooling family.Or search online for a homeschool group in your area. That is how I got started, for three years I never spent over $30 per school year.

Find every homeschool support group you can. Some have yearly used curriculum sales around this time or just before school starts. Also, the support group people may be aware of companies in your area that sell used homeschooling resources.

(1) Ebay no longer allows the sale of answer keys & teacher editions. (Thanks public school teacher lobby! Argh!)
(2) I have had good luck buying a variety of used books on abebooks.com & at Half-Price Books (if you have one near).
(3) The link below will help you find local support groups & co-ops (which almost universally have annual or semi-annual book sales).
(4) You have DEFINITELY made a wonderful choice for you & your son. It is positively AWESOME!

You should check with your county school district to see if they have a book depository or obsolete books warehouse. You can get text books from them for free.

The BEST place is if you have a local hs support group – this is about the time of year they are finishing up and selling things, plus if you make your need known most people have a few older books that they haven’t sold yet. If you live in a large enough town you might have a used hs book store. I have found that although eBay was a good place a few years ago, at this point people are bidding things up PAST THE NEW PRICE. It is possible to find a few off-the-wall items, but if you are looking for a popular curriculum on there, make SURE you know the prices. I did just find a few $40 textbooks for $3 plus shipping on Amazon. Also, if you do have to buy new, Rainbow Resource has TONS Of stuff and most of it is marked down from a normal retail price, so I get LOTS of stuff from them. I didn’t catch your question this morning so I don’t know your situation or son’s age, but if he is not in high school, if I were you, I’d just finish off this year by finding stuff in the local library, then have a nice family summer, and start off fresh with stuff you really want to teach in the fall.

There is a Christian bookstore called Gillian’s in Statesville, NC. They have a huge selection of new and used homeschool books and supplies. You can probably get their number from information. I looked their number up on line once. It wasn’t the right number. There are probably Christian bookstores that are closer to you that carry homeschool supplies and books.
There are some good sites to get homeschool books and supplies for under retail… rocksolidinc.com, rainbowresource.com, learningtree.com,etc.
Also, you can do a general search online. Just type in “homeschool cirriculum” and all sorts of different websites will come up.
If you order directly from the company, you’ll probably pay more. For example, if you want to use Bob Jones cirriculum, and you go to the Bob Jones University Press (BJUP) website, you’ll pay a little more than if you get the same Bob Jones cirriculum from the rock solid inc. website.
I wouldn’t order from ebay or any other auction type place because you may not get a complete set, or the workbooks may be written in.
Buy from a Christian bookstore or some other reputible company.
Congradulations on your decision to homeschool. It is very rewarding. Some days are hard, but don’t give up. Everything has hard days – jobs, relationships, school, life in general.
Kids grow up so quick and before you know it they are on their own. It is such a blessing to not have to send them off to school every day, and to get that extra time with them. Public schools are not the same as they were back in the day. Once upon a time they were safe, but now…
Definately join a local homeschool group so you and your son can meet new friends and do activities with other homeschoolers.
And don’t let the board of education mislead you. When I started homeschooling, they tried everything to try to get me to change my mind. They even told me I had to do 517 minutes of instructional time every day, 180 days a year. In my state it isn’t like that. Homeschoolers have their own set of rules and regulations. As long as you teach them all the required subjects, it doesn’t matter how long your school day lasts.
Have lots of fun and God bless you,

bigwords.com, you can search by title, keyword or ISBN (best)

Assuming SC doesn’t require you to use a formal program or one of their, hand-picked programs, I would start at the library. You can teach just about every subject with books from the library (except maybe higher math).
After that, check to see if any of the local support groups have a used curriculum sale (they’ll be starting them soon, as the “school year” is almost over).
Finally, check on the web. Sites like eBay allow individuals to sell materials (although eBay has prohibited the sale of teacher’s manuals, many get around that by selling “homeschool guides”). There are also many Yahoo! groups dedicated to the buying and selling of used homeschool materials (search for “used homeschool” under groups). There are even a few websites that sell used curriculum.
There are plenty of outlets, you just need to choose which to use. Best wishes for happy and successful homeschooling!

Look on ebay. Or, if you want to use a specific curriculum, try AbekaBook. They a fairly good company. If your son is in highschool(I didn’t see your other question) use Apologia science for his science curriculum. It is fantastic.

All the above answers are great!
We definitely use our local library as much as possible
Also, check out this Yahoo Group:
It’s a nation-wide place for giving and getting from homeschooling supplies. You’re allowed to ask for shipping, but that’s it. Not a huge lot of offers, but the more people who find out about it, the better it will be.
Oh…and no, I’m not the owner…just a member LOL

Abeka is a good curriculum for homeschooling..I have also heard good things about Bob Jones…these are both Christian curriculums, though…assuming you are okay with that!
Good luck!

It really depends on how you are going to go about home schooling. I use an accredited school where I enroll my child, and they send me all of the books and lesson plans. I teach the material, and administer all tests, etc. If I need any help presenting something, or if my child has a question that I just can’t answer, we can call them and they will help us through it. At the end of each quarter, I have to send required paperwork back to them for their teachers to grade. They issue a report card, and keep transcripts and records, as well. Some of these can be very pricey, but some are very reasonable.
If you were interested in this kind of approach, there are many companies that do this. There are many faith-based programs, and some secular ones, as well.
If you want to make up your own curriculum, I would suggest that you find a local support group (as many others have suggested), Many of these groups have yearly curriculum sales, and/or the members of these groups can be invaluable resources when it comes to finding stores that cater to home schoolers. When I met up with a lady who home schools near me, I found out that there is actually a Home School Store nearby that I never knew existed!
Good Luck!
