What is the best place to get learning materials and tests for home schooling? If location matters-Raleigh, NC

shellybelle24 asked:

I will be working with grades 8 through 11 and I want to get suggestions on the best place to purchase books/learning materials and end of year tests. I'd also like to know if anyone has had any problems with transferring credits from home schooling to a public school. Any information and suggestions on home schooling is appreciated. Thank you.

I have some friends that home-schooled their 3 kids. The last child is now attending public school in the eleventh grade. They were all ahead of the government school system when the parents allowed them to attend for the last 3 years they were in school. The public school system will do placement tests when and if you decide to allow them to be in that environment. There are many materials available;(syllabus, forums, parent groups, etc.) that will be helpful to locate the information you are seeking. You may also want to contact “Focus On the Family” ministry (www.family.org) to get some great feedback. You probably have some families close in your own neighborhood that would welcome the opportunity to help. I admire your dedication to take this time to be a great influence in your kids life. Be Blessed in your journey!

You might want to look at hslda.org. It has a lot of info on home schooling as well as a list home school academies in your area. Also check out the book “A Thomas Jefferson Education.” You can find it at in the bookstore section. It is a must read for anyone who home schools (or anyone else for that matter).

One of the best resources that I have found for homeschooling, is the aBeka program . Their books are informative, and fun. Also their workbooks, tests, quizzes, and keys are designed to not only keep the child’s attention but to stimulate the thinking process as well.
